Drill bits are different in size range between 3/8 inch to ½ inch. Twist type drill bit is the most popular type in both professional and home DIY owners for its versatile use.
It has 3 principal parts,
- Drill point or dead center
- Body
- Shank
The shank is the part attached to the drill machine called a chuck. Chuck has three jaws clamp the drill bit. Shank size is the main part for a drill bit to define which size drill fits for it. Always consider the size of the chuck and the shank similar to work together.
Now the question “do all drill bits fit all drills?” No, all drill bits fit all drills. The 3/8 inch shank drill bit fit only 3/8 inch chuck drill, and ½ inch shank drill bits fit only ½ inch chuck drill. ½ inch drill also accepts up to ½ inch dia shaft drill bit as well. Hex shank drill bit will fit regular drill. A regular drill bit with a hex shank holder will fit to impact driver. And SDS drill bit will only work in SDS drill machine.
